Key Ingredients
Let’s delve into the lineup of ingredients and uncover why each one is essential for creating our delectable barbecue sauce:
- Ketchup takes the lead as the MVP of condiments, providing a tangy sweetness that forms the foundation of our sauce, delivering that iconic tomatoey goodness. Opt for sugar-free ketchup to ensure healthier sauce that doesn’t compromise on flavor.
- Date syrup is a natural sweetener sourced from fruit. Beyond adding sweetness, it infuses the sauce with a rich, earthy sweetness that elevates its overall complexity.
- Vegan Worcestershire sauce is the savory superstar of our lineup. Bursting with umami goodness, it contributes flavor to the sauce, without any animal products, ensuring guilt-free indulgence.
- Liquid smoke steps onto the scene, bringing that quintessential smokiness that every barbecue sauce needs. Its bold flavor adds depth and character, transforming the sauce into a true smoky sensation.
- Chipotle chili powder joins the party, delivering a classic barbecue element with its smoky kick. This fiery addition brings heat and depth to the sauce.
- Apple cider vinegar adds a signature tangy twist, imparting a zesty zing that balances the sweetness and enhances the sauce’s overall brightness.
- Onion and garlic powder, smoked paprika, and sea salt—a trio of spices that work in harmony to tie everything together. These typical barbecue spices contribute to the sauce’s flavor explosion, ensuring a well-rounded and satisfying barbecue experience with every bite.

The Process
Let’s walk through the steps of crafting your delicious homemade BBQ sauce. Begin by gathering all the ingredients, measuring and placing them into a saucepan. This includes ketchup, date syrup, vegan Worcestershire sauce, liquid smoke, chipotle chili powder, apple cider vinegar, balsamic vinegar (if using), onion powder, garlic powder, smoked paprika, and sea salt.
Once all the ingredients are in the saucepan, grab a whisk and begin stirring until everything is well combined and smooth. This ensures all the flavors meld together seamlessly.

Now, it’s time to bring the sauce to life! Set the saucepan over low heat and allow the mixture to simmer gently. Stir occasionally to prevent any sticking or burning, and keep an eye on the consistency as the sauce thickens.
As the sauce simmers, you’ll notice it becoming thicker. This slow cooking process allows the flavors to intensify and develop, resulting in a rich and flavorful homemade BBQ sauce.
Once the sauce reaches your desired thickness and temperature, it’s ready to serve! You can enjoy it immediately, drizzling it over your favorite veggie burgers or vegetables for a burst of smoky flavor. Alternatively, if you prefer your barbecue sauce chilled, allow it to cool before transferring it to a covered container and storing it in the refrigerator.
Whether served hot or cold, homemade barbecue sauce adds a delicious touch to any dish. So go ahead, whip up a batch and elevate your next BBQ feast with this flavorful, guilt-free creation!
Recipe Tips
- Chipotle chili powder can be spicy. Omit it if you do not want your homemade BBQ sauce to have a little heat. Increase it if you want some kick to your sauce!
- If you don’t have date syrup, you can use dark brown sugar.
- Make the sauce your own by increasing or decreasing any of the ingredients listed. You can make it tangier with more mustard or vinegar, sweeter with more date syrup, or spicier with the addition of more chipotle chili powder or a dash of cayenne pepper.
- If you have whole dates, you can use those instead of date syrup. Soak ¼ cup chopped dates in hot water for 15 minutes before adding them to your sauce. After heating the BBQ sauce, place all ingredients in a blender and process until smooth. You can also use an immersion blender.
- Use raw fresh garlic instead of garlic powder for bolder garlic flavor. You may want to process the sauce in a blender until smooth.
- Same goes for onions. You can use raw fresh onion instead of onion powder if desired.
- I added 1 tablespoon of Smoked Hickory Balsamic Vinegar from California Balsamic. This took the BBQ sauce to the next level!
- Feel free to decrease the amount of sea salt to suit your needs or use a different type of salt. We like green salt as it has less sodium than sea salt.

Keepin’ it Fresh: How to store the BBQ Sauce
After the BBQ sauce cools to room temperature, store it in a glass container with a lid in the refrigerator for up to 7 days.

Frequently Asked Questions
It will last for 7 days in a covered container in the refrigerator.
Tomato sauce doesn’t offer the same flavor profile as ketchup, however, by tweaking the amount of tomato paste in the recipe, we think this could work. If you try it, let us know how it works out!
Of course! If you have any molasses, add a tablespoon of that to your sauce to give it the dark rich sugar flavor that dates bring to the sauce.
